What To Keep In Mind When Hanging Bike In Your Garage?
No matter what material your garage walls are made of or what kind of ceiling it has, you can find a way to hang your bike in it. Don’t have sufficient space on the walls, no problem. You can hang the bike on the ceiling. So, there are a lot of workarounds here.
However, it’s essential to factor these in. What kind of material the walls or ceilings are made of will determine which process you’ll need to follow. There won’t be any significant changes in the procedure, but even the most minor changes will play a major role in ensuring the sustainability of the hanging system.
For example, you can’t use the same method for installing the bike hanger on a plaster or brick wall. In the case of a brick wall, you can install the hanger anywhere you want, but you’ll need to find the studs first on a plaster wall.
Also, you’ll need wall fasteners for securing the hanger well, and it’s important to pick the right fastener. If the fastener isn’t capable of holding the weight of your bike, then it may fall in the future, which in turn will damage your bike.
So, keep an eye out for these factors when you start the installation process. Also, make sure to follow our guidelines properly, and the chances of going wrong will become relatively negligible.
How To Hang A Bike From The Garage Ceiling
Don’t you have any floor or wall space left in your garage? No worries, you can always hang your bike from the ceiling. Although this may seem daunting at first, it’s rather easy. The installation process is simple and similar to hanging the bike from the wall. In this section, we’ll break the process down for your understanding.
You can hang your bike from the garage ceiling using a pulley. However, there are two ways in which you can do so. Let’s discuss both!
Vertical Orientation
In vertical orientation, you lift your bike using one pulley. So, the bike remains perpendicular to the ground, and although it leaves only a little height below it, this orientation helps save a ton of floor space.
So, if your garage doesn’t offer much space for hanging your bike horizontally, you can opt for this method.
To do so, you need to get started with the installation process first. First, you’ll need to get a pulley. After intensive market research, we’ve found the Overhead Hoist System from RAD Sports to be the best one out there. It has a 100-pound capacity, so it should be enough to hang most bikes. Also, it isn’t costly and even cheaper than some bike racks. So, it’s a great option.
Once you have the pulley, you need to find the right spot on your ceiling to install it. You’ll need to find a stud if your garage’s ceiling is drywall or plaster. You can install the pulley anywhere you want, if it’s made of concrete or brick.
To find the stud, you must follow a deliberate process involving either an electronic stud finder or a magnetic stud finder. The first one works best on drywall, and the second one on plaster walls. These are small devices that can help you detect a stud.
Once you find the stud, you need to drill a hole in it using a drill machine. You’ll need to be careful while picking the right drill bit. They’ll come right off if the drill bit is larger than the screws.
Here’s a pro tip. If you don’t want to drill a hole too deep, you can attach a piece of tape to the bit. This tape will prevent you from drilling further than the length it’s on.
After drilling the bit, it’s time to install a fastener. Once you have the fastener in, just screw the pulley in. However, this doesn’t end the process. You’ll have to install the system’s anchor on a nearby wall. So, it’s recommended you install the pulley as close to the wall as possible.
You could glue the anchor to the wall, essentially a hook for tying the pulley’s cord. However, we recommend screwing it in because that’ll offer much more stability. After this, loop the line through the pulley and keep an adequate length so it can be tied to the anchor.
After installation, you just have to attach the hook of the pulley to the handlebars of your bike. Once you hoist the bike, it will lift vertically. You can hoist the bike either by its front or rear wheel.
Horizontal Orientation
Next up, there’s the horizontal orientation. In this orientation, the bike remains parallel to the floor once lifted. Why would you consider this? Because when your bike is raised vertically, it may make the hydraulic brake a bit spongy. Although it’s not a permanent problem, it can get irritating over time. Also, horizontal orientation is a bit more secure than vertical as you’ll hang the bike using two hooks instead of one. So there’s better balance and weight distribution.
There’s not much difference between the installation process of vertical orientation. However, you’ll need to install both bases of the pulley instead of one.
So, once you have the pulley, look for two studs. Also, make sure to install them as close to the wall as possible. After installing the pulleys, you’ll need to position the bike underneath them. Now, attach one of the hooks to the handlebars and the other to the bike’s seat.
Hoist the bike slowly and let it rest at the height of your preference. One thing to note here is that you’ll need an extra pair of hands once you lower the bike, which is valid for both orientations. This is because, in the case of the vertical direction, someone will have to reposition the bike in a horizontal orientation manually.
In case of horizontal hanging, someone will still have to hold the bike in an upright position once it’s lowered. This can only be avoided if the anchor is close to the pulley so that you can do both yourself.
Advantages
- Hanging the bike from the ceiling saves some wall space
- It is easy to set up and leaves sufficient room for parking a car
Disadvantages
- Requires an extra pair of hands
Tools And Accessories Required
- A pulley system of your choice
- Screws
- Fasteners
- Drill with an appropriate drill bit
- Electronic or magnetic stud finder
- Construction-grade glue for attaching the anchor
- Hammer
- Measuring tape
How to Hang a Bike from Rafters
Hanging a bike from the rafters can have a completely different experience, so we decided to make a separate section.
Now, you can hang your bike from rafters both vertically and horizontally. You can also install a pulley on your rafters. However, that would only complicate the procedure, and it’s not an absolute necessity.
To hang your bike from the rafters, you can also use a rope with a hook. Take a look at one of these ropes from Attwood. These ropes are strong enough to withstand heavy loads. Also, the hook is quite secure, secure sufficient for holding a bike without slipping.
So, you can easily use one of these. You’ll also require a wall hook to hang your bike from one of these. We highly recommend these boat hooks from Sea Choice because of their fantastic build quality. Install one of these on the nearby wall.
Now, take one end of the rope and take it over one of the rafters near the book. Attach the hook to the front tire of your bike and pull the rope from the other side. This will help you hoist the bike. Keep pulling until the bicycle reaches the height of your preference. After that, tie the rope to the hook, and the bike will remain secure.
This is an excellent method because you can use the rafters as an alternative to pulleys. It will also save some money as you won’t have to get a pulley but getting a cheap rope with a hook will suffice.
Advantages
- It doesn’t require buying a pulley but functions in a similar way
- It can be installed tool-free if the hook is glued to the wall
Disadvantages
- Requires a certain amount of arm strength to hoist the bike
Tools And Accessories Required
- A rope with a hook
- A hook to tie the rope to
- Construction-grade glue or
- Drill machine with appropriate drill bit and screws
- Hammer
- Measuring tape
How To Hang Bike On Wall In Garage
Hanging the bike on the ceiling may not be suitable for everyone. One of the primary reasons behind this is you’ll need a lot of strength to hoist the bike to the top. While this may be easy for some in a regular scene, it’ll become quite challenging after a workout or a long and tiring bike ride.
So, from a strength perspective, hanging your bike on the garage wall might just be an easier alternative. In this section, we’ll take a look at how you can do so.
Vertical Orientation
You can hang your bike both vertically and horizontally on the wall. If you don’t have a ton of wall space, you can opt for vertical orientation. Also, this method will allow you to place furniture or other items around the bike. So this saves wall space and lets you utilize more floor space.
For hanging your bike vertically on the wall, you’ll need to buy one of these vertical stands from Steadyrack. These great racks are easy to install and can be used to hang regular, fat, mountain, and fender bikes. However, you’ll need a different version of the rack for each of these types.
The installation process is straightforward as well. The rack can be installed with a drill and a few screws. However, you’ll need to measure the bike so that the rack placement is appropriate.
There are two ends to the rack. One end holds the bike’s rear wheel, and this one sits higher. The lower end acts as a support to the front wheel of your bike in place. To place these appropriately, we recommend holding the bike against the wall first.
Simulate the positions and find the best height where the bike won’t be too high for you to lift but will be high enough not to touch the ground. Also, if the bike is too close to the ground, it won’t look good either. We usually place the rear wheel holder about 190cm off the ground.
This is an excellent way of hanging your bike vertically on the wall, but it’ll also lead to a spongy hydraulic issue. So, that’s something to be aware of if your bike has hydraulic brakes.
Horizontal Orientation
If you have enough space on your wall and want to show your bike off, then going for the horizontal orientation would be your best option.
You’ll need a bike rack to hang your bike horizontally on the garage wall. There are various types of bike racks that you can choose from. We would recommend getting the Topeak Solo holder. This one has a sturdy aluminum build, which means it can hold the bike’s weight. Also, the holder is relatively smooth, so it won’t end up scratching your bike all over.
Now, just like the ceiling, your garage wall can be made of any material. Depending on the material, you’ll need to choose the right approach. In general, you’ll have to start by finding the joists. Once you’ve found one or two of them, mark them so you can drill the spot accurately.
Upon drilling, put a fastener in the holes. You may face some resistance, but using a hammer will make things easier. Finally, install the rack in place. The rack shouldn’t be installed too high, as you may be unable to lift the bike properly. Also, you’ll have difficulty mounting the bike on the hook with your hands extended completely. We recommend keeping two and a half feet of clearance below the bike.
The advantage of mounting your bike horizontally is that it doesn’t lead to any problems like spongy hydraulic brakes. Also, it lets you display your ride in its full glory. Plus, horizontal hangers have better weight distribution compared to vertical ones. So, these are considered safer overall.
However, they do end up consuming a ton of wall space. So, if you’re planning on putting additional furniture or anything on your garage wall, you shouldn’t mount the bike horizontally.
Using a rack isn’t your only option when mounting the bike horizontally. An old handlebar is another thing you can use instead of a rack. If you don’t have one, you can always get cheap handlebars like FSA Non-series handlebars.
So, how can you use these as racks? Attach the handlebar to the wall of your garage, and you’ll be able to use it as a rack. Just mount the bike on the curved side of the handlebar, ensure it’s secure, and you’re done!
Advantages
- It lets you display your bike
- It doesn’t lead to any hydraulic issues
Disadvantages
- Hoisting the bike can be a bit tougher
Tools And Accessories Required
- Bike rack or old handlebars
- Screws
- Fasteners
- Hammer
- Drill with the appropriate bit
- Measuring tape
How To Hang A Bike In Garage With Hooks
So, you can use hooks to hang bikes both horizontally and vertically. Let’s take a look at both orientations.
Vertical Orientation
Using a hook, you can hang your bike vertically from the ceiling and the wall. You can do so in the cheapest way. All you’ll need for this process to work is the common tools and a Shepherd Hardware hooks. These can be found online or in your nearest hardware store and are dirt cheap. Yet, these are heavy-duty and capable of holding the weight of your bike.
However, you will have to install proper fasteners. As you’ll use only one hook in this mounting system, the entire weight will fall on a single hook. So, unless the fasteners offer sufficient grip, the screw will loosen over time and eventually slip. Even the fastener might slip if it isn’t good enough.
If the bike is to be hung on the wall, the hook must be installed at the height of 6 feet at least. If it’s to be suspended from the ceiling, one must find an appropriate position where the bike won’t cause any disruption.
Horizontal Orientation
We’ve looked at how hooks can help you hang your bike vertically from the ceiling and the wall. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for horizontal mounting, as hooks will let you hang your bike horizontally only from the wall.
To do so, you’ll need at least two or three hooks. We recommend getting three hooks, as the more, the better. If you use two hooks, you’ll need to install them side by side and use them the same way you would’ve used a bike rack. That is, you’ll have to mount the bike’s top tube on the hooks.
However, we don’t recommend this as this centered weight distribution may not be suitable for this method. Instead, we recommend using three hooks. Before you start drilling, you’ll have to measure your bike correctly for this to work.
Measure the front wheel, to the top tube, and finally to the rear wheel. Now, you must drill three wall holes that align perfectly with these three parts. Finally, screw the hooks in and attach each of the three components to a hook.
This method offers better weight distribution, so it should be preferred. However, using hooks for the horizontal mount isn’t preferred because it takes a lot of effort to attach the bike to three different hooks.
Advantages
- Hooks are cheap, so the expenses reduce drastically
- Hooks can be used for both horizontal and vertical hanging
- They are straightforward to install
Disadvantages
- Hooks aren’t as intuitive or easy to use as other hanging systems
Tools And Accessories Required
- Hooks
- Screws
- Fasteners
- Hammer
- Drill with the appropriate bit
- Measuring tape
Conclusion
As you can see, multiple ways of hanging a bike in the garage exist. However, not all of these are equally effective or viable. We recommend hanging the bike horizontally with a pulley from the ceiling if you have a small garage where you need to save both floor and wall space.
The reason is this will help you save some extra space both on the wall and on the floor. So you’ll be able to store more stuff in your garage. On the other hand, if you have rafters, you can try hoisting the bike using a rope around the rafters. This is also recommended as it lowers expenses.
